NATO and the Cold War - 512 Words
Thesis: Although NATO provided assistance in containing the spread of communism, and its member countries applied economic pressure on the Soviet Union, neither NATO nor President Reagan should be solely credited with causing the fall of the Soviet Union and thus the end of the Cold War. Instead, it was a combination of the tough Reagan administration policies and NATOââ¬â¢s threatening military armory along with grave economic problems within the Soviet Union that ultimately brought the end to the Cold War. The North Atlantic Treaty was written to form an alliance between the anticommunist Western European and North American nations. When it was written, in 1949, the twelve nations that would initially make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, all came to the agreement that if any one of the member countries were attacked, such attack would be taken as an offense to all of the member countries, and a counter assault would certainly take place (North Atlantic Tre aty). Because NATO was a defense organization, being prepared to fight back in the event of an attack from the Soviet Union embodied one of its most important requirements. Therefore, much consideration and money went into assembling an array of potent nuclear weapons that could overwhelm the Soviets and inhibit them from triggering a nuclear war (North Atlantic Treaty Organization 4). Preface In our data analysis we do some univariate analysis before proceeding to models. In survival analysis it is highly recommended to look at the Kaplan-Meier curves for all the categorical predictors. This will provide insight into the shape of the survival function for each group and give an idea of whether or not the groups are proportional. We also consider the tests of equality across strata to explore whether or not to include the predictor in the final model. For the categorical variables such as marital, eservice, plusservice and totalservice we use the log-rank test of equality across strata which is a non-parametric test. For the continuous variables such as age, address, income, education, employment, and reside we use aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Consequently we find the better model after dropping variables with the p-values more than 0.05. Model 5 is the best model which has all the significant variables and has lowest AIC value of 1478.82 and BIC value of 1513.17. If the marital status is altered from married to unmarried, while holding all other variables constant, the rate of churn decreases by (100% - 66.5%) = 33.5%. As year in current address is increased by one year, all other variables are held constant, the rate of churn decreases by (100% - 94.5%) = 5.5%. As year with current employer is increased by one year, all other variables are held constant, the rate of churn decreases by (100% - 93.2%) = 6.8%. As people switch from non eservice to e service, all other variables are held constant, the churn rate decrease by (100% - 56.5%) = 43.5%. As people switch from non plusservice to plusservice, all other variables are held constant, the churn rate decrease by (100% - 54.5%) = 45.5%. As education level increases, all other variables are held constant, the churn rate increases by 12.83%. Finally, I adjust my model for heteroscedasticity by using robust function. Question: Discuss about the Global Business Strategy. Answer: Predominantly, geographical structures have operational and strategic merits .From the geographical organizational structure, close consumer communication and better satisfaction of local consumer needs (Business Organisational structure, n. d.).Also, there is the ability to operate different divisions in different physical locations thus meeting the local needs of the market and at the same time running a functional enterprise. In the Bayer scenario, there are various divisions of the company in different physical locations but they are functionally operated by the same Bayer Policy. However, this organizational structure leads to extra expenses going to duplicated resources, employment opportunities, functionality among other factors. Same can be said for Bayer Company had contemplated shutting down one of its divisions owing to cost cutting due to the duplicity of functionality and the additional cost of running it. Advantages and Disadvantages of a matrix structure Through this structure of the organization, integration of objectives, project, and functional as possible as was the case in Bayer BMA NA. The CEO-led team found another way instead of shutting down the company in a bid to minimize the costs. However, matrix organizational structure has potential adverse effects .Specifically, in this case, Babe, the C.E.O of the BMS NA had to reconstitute his team that came up with the proposal to save the division. Under Matric Organizational structure, there might be as structural collapse which is similar to what happened in the Bayer case.Gleeson,2018).In addition, there was an increment in the management cost.In this case, Babe needed a 70m(USD) injection to aid his plan to save the BMS NA division. Also, Babe and his team faced difficulties from the Bayer group top leadership who considered their proposal as deviating from the company norms which is a typical disadvantage of matrix organizational structure. Emerging Markets In the event that is a private equity investor, my targets would be companies with goods or services that are highly competitive. In addition, I would look out for companies with a huge capability of growing or expanding due to the fact that they are likely to get better returns following a substantial investment. Also, I would aspire to work with a company with highly qualified and stable team as part of its management. A stable and qualified management team is likely to produce better outcomes as compared to the reverse combination. In addition, I would target firms with advanced technology in their operations due to the likelihood of producing better products and offer services at considerably affordable prices as compared to a firm with traditional production methods In the event that is approached by a private equity company, as C.E.O, I would first explore options available to my company such as buy to sell option. In addition, I would consider whether a flexibility in ownership might have better outcomes (Barber Goold, 2007).Secondly, I would consider the possibility of a merger and acquisitions. Also, I would consider the private equity firm with a highly substantive equity. In addition, I would conduct a thorough research on the potential private equity company on its financial status, a record of performance with previous companies and its position in the market before I decide on a private equity investment. It is imperative as a C.E.O of a company to exercise due diligence in the vetting of potential investors to ensure you acting in the best interest of the company. References Barber, F, and Goold, M. Social Media Platforms Effects on Social identity
Social Media Platforms Effects on Social identity Social media platforms over the internet have potentially profound effects on the creation of social identity of modern generation. Identity refers to a socially constructed attribute of self-concept as it is represented to the outside world. The formation or construction of identity is a unique practice in everybodyââ¬â¢s life, since it is one of the ways through which we can find our place in our cultures and among other people.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Social Media Platforms Effects on Social identity specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As it would be observed, the transformation of this important social concept in the contemporary world is being conducted in new and even more global approaches. In this era of internet technology, humans are becoming accustomed to using various social media websites daily, where they spend a great deal of time talking about themselves, the people they know, and the ir interests, among other significant aspects of their lives. The social media, whose reach and influence is global, is one of the most common avenues that are used to shape and enhance the concept of identity nowadays. This paper examines the ways through which we can use mobile and internet technologies to create our identities. There is no doubt that social media has afforded people an important opportunity to establish a visible, strong record of themselves through interactive digital platforms (Rettberg 2009). This popular trend of technology is not only offering the very tools that are needed to construct our identities, but it also provides a basis upon which representations about ourselves can be promoted. Social identify formation happens while people are busy establishing new communities around themselves over the internet, exchanging different aspects of their lives with one another and forming a visible profile of themselves for anyone to see. This self disclosure throug h personal web pages plays a significant role in identity formation. Knowingly or sometimes even unknowingly, we tend to give representations about ourselves through our activities in social networking websites. This mainly happens through our time to time conversations with other people in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Social media offers a wonderful archiving of our personal information as it is posted in our personal web pages, thus making it easy for anyone to read it and get to know our identities.Advertising Looking for research paper on communications media? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More When we decide to join Facebook, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Twitter, and MySpace among other social networking sites, we begin by filling out our profiles to give other people an overview of who we are. Some of the personal details filled in those templates include, but are not limited to, names, gender, age, residence, and national identities. Some sites may also require us to give our hobbies and interests, among other things. All these information diversify our opportunities of connecting to larger cultural templates. This is the data primarily used to tell our stories to the outside world through the social networking websites mentioned above. The templates in the social networking sites that usually begin with a virtual blank page continue to get filled with everything that interests not just us, but other people as well. These contents can include things such as photos and their descriptions, our current moods, our favorite activities, and status feeds, among other things that may be of significant meaning to our lives. The best thing about many social networking websites is that user privacy and security have been ensured, and people can use different features on the platforms to control the operations of their personal web pages (Livingstone 2008). In this regard, not everything that we fill in our social media profiles is visible to other people. Facebook, which has rapidly emerged as the most expeditious means of social communication in the contemporary world, serves as a perfect example of how social media helps to create and shape our identities. Because of its popularity and social prestige across the world, Facebook is arguably the most preferred social media channel. This global reputation can be confirmed by the fact that, Facebook is the social site with the biggest number of users in the world today. After filling up the templates of our Facebook accounts with implicit and explicit information about ourselves, we sit back and wait for other people to comment on the contents. Stories and images posted on social media platforms are likely to attract all types of reactions from the people who read them. In some cases, posts may be ignored and passed around, but this depends on the nature of the posts and the information or message they portray.Adver tising We will write a custom research paper sample on Social Media Platforms Effects on Social identity specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Apart from posting images and stories on our social media pages for others to read and respond to with relevant feedback, people can also use the platforms to chat with one another directly, either through messaging or live video chatting. The kind of feedback we get on social media sites is a crucial element that is necessary in helping us determine how we are faring as far as self exploration is concerned. While some people, especially those who know us better, may give positive and interesting responses to our wall postings, others will tend to criticise them in an outright manner. No matter the kind of responses we get on our posts, they play a significant role in helping us understand what other people think of the way we have told our stories through the social media. This, however, helps us to make better decisions on the improvements that we might need to make regarding the way we represent ourselves through social networking sites. For example, every positive feedback on the stories I post on my Facebook wall helps me to realise that I am not alone in my concealed interest. This actually gives me confidence to reveal more about myself and the interest to expand my social boundaries by joining more online social communities. Exposure and disclosure are two significant aspects that would tend to have a serious impact on the way we use social media to represent ourselves. Social media exposes us all to the public, irrespective of who we are. Even though young users of the social media are focused mainly on self representation where they intend to give the best impressions about themselves, it is surprising to discover that many just end up tarnishing their real identities unknowingly. As it would be observed, some social networking sites have kept their user age-restric tion levels very low, thus making it easy for minors to join the sites, without even having a better understanding of what the social media entails. A good example here is the Facebook, Inc. which has declared thirteen years as the acceptable minimal age one should have attained in order to possess and manage a Facebook account.Advertising Looking for research paper on communications media? Many people, especially the minors, donââ¬â¢t have a perfect understanding of what social media can do to their identities, and for that reason, they end up exposing themselves in bad ways. Sometimes, we donââ¬â¢t have the slightest idea of how our actions in social media platforms can affect our identities, and this ends up giving the wrong picture of ourselves. For instance, let us take the idea of ââ¬ËLikingââ¬â¢ as it applies on Facebook. Many Facebook users donââ¬â¢t know that there is more than just showing other people that you are impressed by their stories, images, or even ads by liking them (Zhao, Grasmuck, Martin 2008). However, the truth of the matter here is that, by liking somebodyââ¬â¢s post, you become part of their social media identity as far as that post is concerned. This has the meaning that, you will be tying yourself to that person or whatever they have posted that you have liked in a more public way. This can give a wrong impression on someoneââ¬â¢s identity, especially if what they have liked entails a distasteful message or a set of values that they would not want to share in. In this regard, it is always important for people to try to understand what something really means before they click that button to express their feelings about it. This ensures that we stay safe as far as social identity formation is concerned. Online self-presentations can have serious implications on our identities and thatââ¬â¢s why we should always think twice before we post things about our lives on social media (Thompson 2013). This is very important considering the digital memory associated with the social media. As a matter of fact, identity construction through social media is a process of deterrent memory-formation. The activities involved in online identity formation are conducted and exchanged in the nature of digital technology. This has the meaning that the images and stories we post on social media can be circulated very fast on the internet, even after we have removed them. The way we represent ourselves on social media speaks a lot about our real personalities, thus making it easy for other people to understand us better. There is no doubt that many of the most successful individuals and organisations in the world have achieved their glory through internet technologies, particularly the social media. A good example here is President Barack Obama, who had successfully used social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to communicate his presidential bid to the American people in 2008. This tactic is also being applied by brilliant marketers who use popular social networking sites to establish identities for their brands. As a matter of fact, social media is a very powerful tool that can be used for identity formatio n. With todayââ¬â¢s advancements in digital technology, we can easily create and maintain good identities of ourselves. However, just as it can it be used to present our true identities, social media can also misrepresent us if used in the wrong way. In this regard, it is advisable for people to use social media wisely so as to benefit from it as far as construction of identity is concerned. In situations where individuals and organisations are seeking recognition and attention, social media is a powerful tool whose effectiveness can never be overestimated as it has been shown in this paper. Micro Economics - Essay Example According to the Pareto principle social welfare definitely augments only if the benefit of any member of society increases and the welfare of no one falls. Actually when the Pareto criterion is strictly spoken it can be considered as simply an aggregation and decision rule and which could be enforced to non-utility. In reality the original distribution of income and wealth is generally taken as if it is given and alterations in either income or wealth cannot be measured beyond the need of changes themselves satisfy the Pareto criterion. The possible Pareto criterion, involving the gains associated to some alteration to outbalance the losses induced by it, is a less protective criterion. The Pareto principle by itself does not affirm the conclusion that any alteration from a non-Pareto-optimal position to a Pareto-optimum is an improvement. For this, economists rely on the compensation principle. On the other hand this principle itself can be questioned. Economists actually stress that the compensation required in demonstrating a potential Pareto improvement should be handled as hypothetical. But, now the issue is with regard to what is this potential Pareto improvement (PPI)? The potentiality of the principle is regarded as immaterial for its being an improvement? Many economists attempt to instill a PPI with some quasi-physical meaning. They indicate that a PPI, though not the same to an increment in social welfare, nonetheless still establishes an increase in the dimension of the cake from which welfare is deduced, or the capability of the oven in which the cake is baked. These economists state that a positive result of the compensation test depicts an increase in aggregate real income (Kaldor 1939: 550, 551). At the same time economists like Chipman (1987, pp. 524- 530); Kaldor (1939, p. 550), believe in the productive potential of the economy and Boadway and Bruce (1984, p. 97), Hennipman (1976, p. 476); Hicks (1981,
